Tennessee is blessed with an abundance of trees. "Tennessee's forests cover 14 million acres (52 percent) of the state," reports the TN Dept. of Agriculture. Our incredible tree canopy is pretty impressive and is truly something to celebrate. Yet, we are losing trees more rapidly than they are being planted. From 2001 to 2020, Tennessee lost more than 1.5 million acres of tree cover or a 10% decrease since 2001 according to Global Forest Watch. Causes of tree loss include wildfire, insects and disease, improper management and urban expansion according to the TN Dept. of Agriculture. The Department helps to extinguish the 2,500 fires that burn in the state each year and works to control the disease and insects that ravish the forests. They also work to support reforestation initiatives. This is important work, but there is a LOT more to be done to help replace the forests we have lost. Green Interchange is thrilled to be part of this work. We'll be announcing some exciting new programs you can participate in soon. The best time to plant trees in TN is October - April. In the meantime, your support makes a difference. A donation of just $6 helps us plant a tree in a highway interchange, and can help offset your CO2 as well. Thank you for helping us plant more trees!
